Holiday Recipes: Fail-Proof Thanksgiving Dinner, Part 1

Loved this episode. I ended up making the vegetarian bread pudding and my family loved it. I changed it up a little, though; I didn't have cheddar cheese handy so instead I diluted more dijon with white wine a tossed the greens in it, then the cheese. It had a unique taste because I used an apple-pear wine instead of grapes, because my boyfriend's mom is allergic to them. Delicious!

Thanks for this video! I used and I cooked an entire Thanksgiving meal for my family this year in about 5 hours. It was my first time cooking a turkey and it turned out perfect!

A classic at my family's Thanksgiving table is a squash and apples dish, and it is really easy. Peel and slice up a butternut squash, and cut up about 4-5 medium sized apples. Put them in any sized oven safe baking dish and season them with cinnamon, and a little brown sugar. mix it all around, and then cut up under 1/2 a stick of butter and put the pieces all over the top. Stick it into a 350 degree oven for about half an hour, or until the squash is soft enough to poke with a fork. That's it! My sister and I put it together for every Thanksgiving and Christmas, though this year we are only making a small one, because we want to try the bread pudding. Thanks!

I agree that the holiday makes the slight overage forgivable but you were actually only over by 25-cents. :) If the the cranberry and chipotle sauce was .50 to make, then it would be id="comment_list".25 per serving and not id="comment_list".75. ;)

Thanksgiving for me is the one time every year when we can enjoy Aunt Tommie's (not a typo) oystrer pudding--oysters, saltines, butter and cream--that's it-- an indulgence in every way, oh yum! Its the reward for putting up with turkey, and since I tend to fill up on oyster pudding instead of turkey, I don't doze off early and miss the football! This year I'll hope your bread pudding makes the meal memorable--it sure looks good.

The Thanksgiving meal is my favorite family meal! My mother makes the best homemade stuffing and gravy that is so delish, you stuff yourself just to get another taste.. We have a tradition of creamed onions and cabbage salad ( coleslaw) and mincemeat/apple pie. The best part is we keep it simple and wear our PJ's to the dinner table!!! This way we can be comfy and snuggle in for a movie after cleanup, and before the "Black Friday game plan"

for people cooking a full turkey... brining has always been essential for me in keeping the turkey from going dry (or at least too dry). Every year, I forget which time and temperature combination has worked for me before, but as long as I brine the turkey, it's always juicy. Use 1 cup of iodized salt or 1/2 cup sea salt per 1 gallon of water, however much it takes to cover the turkey. Then add seasonings like peppercorns, garlic, onions, bay leaf, etc. and let it brine overnight in the refrigerator. Make sure you rinse the turkey well before you dress it and leave out the salt when you season it before going into the oven.

Omg, my 13 year old kiddo is going to die over those brussel sprouts. I might even give them a shot and I'm pretty anti-green things. And the gravy looks to die for. Yum.

Ohhh... yummy. My Thanksgiving is done a while ago (Canadian). At my mum's dinner I love her butternut squash soup and her homemade apple pie. http://4.media.tumblr.com/hvzBWzufDf07yjo3PIrG6BAuo1_500.jpg The last two years I've brought a variation on these herbed cheese biscuts: http://pinchmysalt.com/2007/09/05/perhaps-the-best-biscuits-ever/ Thanksgiving at my dad's is often less traditional or predictable - it depends on if we travel to visit family or if some come to visit him, and also depending on what kind of meat he's decided to make. Last year I brought pasta shells stuffed with a mixture of ricotta cheese, moza, and wilted spinach (I believe there was egg to bind it all) covered with a tomato sauce and shredded moza cheese, baked until it's nice and golden brown. I have only recently fallen in love with autumn cooking so I'll probably have better recipes to share next year. :p I'm actually tempted to celebrate American thanksgiving now just so I can cook for it, haha!

Bacon and rosemary will make just about anything taste better! The squash casserole/bread pudding/stuffing looked awesome. Very tempted to try that this year. Been making my own cranberry sauce for years- so easy. Really diggin' the show, keep'em coming.
