How to Make Irish Soda Bread for St. Patrick's Day

I’ve tried to make this bread 2 times! Somehow it doesn’t work. I end up with a flat dough that’s toasted on the outside and undercooked on the inside…. Please HELP ME!!! Do you have any idea of what I’m doing wrong?

I like to make Irish brown bread, it's a wee bit heartier. Just soak 2 cups of oats in two cups of buttermilk, then add (at least) 2 1/2 cups of brown flour, a tsp of salt and of course a tsp of baking soda. Form the loaf, cut the x and bake it for about an hour at 350°F (180°C) - until it sounds hollow or a knife comes out clean. - yumm.
I like it best with salted butter!

I too made this super simple bread, and it was a HUGE hit at our table!  I made it plain, and brushed on some butter when it came out.  It was so good.  I'll be putting herbs in it the next time just to change it up a bit.  Thanks for this great easy recipe!

i made mini cupcakes with green frosing and sprinkles...they were great at work and the next day sweet for our hangovers

bread machine can u try some recipes using one, and more quick stuff hearty meals i cook for my three Sons n three Grandsons on Sundays n they are big not fat tall men n thier Dad to. keep up the good work

I added some caraway seeds, dill weed and parsley to mine, and it was soooooooooooo yummy!  I recommend this!

Ooooh, I'll have to try this because I am a little intimidated by baking bread. My mum makes this every year for St Pat's (her people are Irish) so maybe I'll try to get to her place when she does and try it out myself.

Someone gave me a breadmaking machine and I just don't know about it, lol.

As a mega bread fan (where do you think you got it from?) I've always loved home made breads but thought they were too intimidating to tackle. You've made a delicious looking bread seem easy to do, and the addition of the chives and butter are truly icing on the er, cake. Bet the house smelled wonderful, too!

it would be really cool if you snipped an X on the rolls to mimic the large irish soda bread
plus it makes the rolls look pretty and the chive butter can seep into the rolls

I'm so gonna try that ... never made my bread my self ! Love this show ... looking forward for next weeks video ...

Hi. My nana Kerr taught us many, many years ago not to knead the dough any more than it takes to make the ball form. And we used milk with vinegar in it to make it sour - nana called it "poor milk". Other than that, you're right on.

JUST A LITTLE BACKGROUND FOR MY FELLOW FOODIES.  THE MILD BEAUTIFUL WEATHER IN IRELAND MAKES THE WHEAT TOO SOFT TO TRAP THE GAS IF YOU USE YEAST, THAT IS WHY THEY USE SODA.

My impression was that the x in the dough allowed for easier rising. If you don't slash the top, the crust prevents the insides from getting fluffy.
