Ratio sounded interesting so I bought it and haven't been able to put it down. I finally feel able to walk away from recipes and just do my own thing.
Thanks for the heads up.
One of my favorite cook books is called Cooking by James Peterson. My friend discovered it and now every time we get together we make something from it. It's got all sorts of things from soups to meats to vegetables to deserts to breads, and he gives a cool explanation of the recipe at the beginning of each one. It offers great basics that you can then play with. I highly recommend it!
yes - a classic that every fan of cooking and writing should check out. great pick, and thanks for the comments!

Thanks for the links!
I recently discovered this book... I haven't read it yet, but it looks promising (sad that I missed the author's talk - oh and it's Canadian) http://www.amazon.ca/Locavore-Farmersfields-Rooftop-Canadians-Changing/dp/1554684188/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1278361714&sr=8-1
I'm into lavender right now because it's just in season and there's a pile of it in my backyard. Lemon sugar cookies with lavender, lavender jelly, lavender lemonade, lavender black tea... give it a try! :D
that book looks great, thanks for the tip! i'll check it out.
there's SO MUCH lavender at the farmer's markets here now. it's really making me wish i'd planted some this year, but now i have something new to look forward to next year.
